GDLG-002 - Golden Rings & Secret Spaces

Listening Session 002: Visiting some classic well known musical moments as well as some more obscure gems from the history of Grateful Dead live recordings, complete with the occasional story and insight adding color along the way.

  1. Downloaded the podcast, and I'm looking forward to giving it a listen. I downloaded furthurnet again the other day, and it looks like the userbase has dwindled considerably since I last used it. Is there a lot of trading done online with torrents? What's a good place to get trackers?

  2. The second episode is even better than the first.

Seriously, great job. What a wonderful evening I had last night sipping barleywine and getting lost in the Playing jam.

These selections are sonically beautiful and crisp in addition to being well played.

  3. Mlke - I find that bt.etree.org is one of the best places to get GD music.

  4. nice! that 6/23 jam before ship is some of the most laid back and breeziest music ever. i have spent more than one slow summer night out on the porch with that perfect moment of mellow repeating on the stereo. love it. such a surprisingly relaxed way to ease into a 74 second set. and that plinking sound right before phil starts playing has always sounded to me like a couple of beer bottles, further completing the image of an open air show on a summer night...

  5. Great listening, thanks.
Jazzcore quibble: "Little Sunflower" was written by late trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, but first recorded on a Milt Jackson LP. Cool garciafied version!

  6. What a great job on the podcast. I love the background music that you speak over. Instantly gave me a feel for what was to come with the music. I am listening again right now. Thanks for your love of this music and your unique ability to write and speak to these shows.

  7. Thanks, Phil. I really appreciate it. That music bears a haunting similarity to the sounds I would sometime hear when the stereo stopped playing music altogether. Sort of the sound of silence. It did a really neat, "in tune" job of segueing into the music on this last podcast. Thanks.

Sven, I've already been slapping my forehead on the Freddie Hubbard slip. Serves me right for not bothering to stand up and walk over to my CD rack to check the credits on the back of Jackson's Sunflower disc.

  8. love the podcast, although I cannot listen to the rest of the show past the Playin'. Looking forward to hearing the 6/22/73 segment (The Other One w/ jam).

Is there something wrong with the mp3 posted to the page?

    thanks,
    Harry

  9. Harry, you are the second person to mention having issues grabbing the entire MP3 file. I'm sorry for the trouble. I'm not a techno guru, so I can't venture a guess as to what you should try.

Are you subscribing via iTunes, or just trying to download the MP3?

You could try grabbing the file via a directory like thie: http://www.trumix.com/podcast.php?mode=view&as=1&p=107741

I'm not sure if that would be any better. I keep the files up at a webhost that I pay for, hoping to avoid sketchy connectivity. Alas, even with some 400-500 downloads, there seem to be problems for a few folks.

iTunes, or one of the podcast directories would be my only suggestion at the moment.

Any one else having issues? Anyone else have the techno-skills to help me out? Drop me a line off line.

  10. I'm finally getting a chance to subscribe to this. I've gotten GDLG-001 and the 2/15 Listening Trail ("Best GD Shows") via iTunes. But the one listed as GDLG-002 ("Golden Rings &") times out.

Message under Downloads is "stopped (err= -3259)".

Under Podcasts "(!)" icon it says "There was a problem downloading GDLG-002. The network connection timed out."

    I was able to direct-d/l the mp3 of GDLG-002.

  11. Thanks for the details from iTunes. Unfortunately I think it is intermittent, as I have successfully downloaded both episodes in iTunes twice on two computers trying to reproduce the error.

Understandably, it is a large file (not really willing to reduce the bit rate to save space), and thus susceptible to this stuff. I know it takes a while, but I'd suggest trying again via the iTunes subscription and see if it works.

    Sorry for the trouble.

  12. Wow, I'm really blown away by your podcast!

At first, I thought your voice sounded like HAL. After a minute of listening though, I realized that you have a natural broadcasting voice. Very smooth.

Excellent use of transition music. I now expect it, during the transitions. When I hear it, I know we're off to the next point or song....

The gems you've picked to illustrate are also worthy of mention. In the case of the first podcast, I have found that I'm a huge fan of shows NEAR your picks. Just as you point out, I tend to overlook the lesser known shows which orbit the biggies. I am looking forward to your next podcast and to looking forward to exploring the blog (more).

I think you have the foundation of an original, informative blog/podcast combination, with the potential for popularity.

    Good on ya, brother!

  13. I finally got around to listening to the rest of this episode today. When you started talking about the soundboard recording with the cruel cut in the middle of The Other One, and how you finally found an audience recording with the whole thing, I got really excited to listen to it. A few minutes after you talked about how Phil had two strings on one channel and two on the other, my sound cut out. I thought it was my mp3 player as it does that from time to time, but it turned out that my download got corrupted somehow and it couldn't play the rest. What bitter irony! Guess I'll have to d/l it again!

  14. Mike, sorry for the trouble. I think I'm coming away from this with the conclusion that this file (2h17m at a respectable bit rate) is just big enough to be causing the slightly consistent issue that you mention.

From now on, I'm going to try to keep all episodes at 2 hours or less to avoid this hassle, seeing as the first episode doesn't seem to suffer this same fate.

Downloading again should solve it for you. But still a hassle.

  15. A belated hooray for this second podcast, noah. I really enjoyed the surprise of the bits and pieces that weren't included on the blog -- the LOM jam was a treat [and, for the most anal of jazznerds out there, I think Hubbard debuted it on his "Backlash" album, a few years before that Milt Jackson album], and I was happy to hear the 5/14/78 Let it Grow, also one of my favorites (heck, I think the whole show is a fine one, albeit a little bumpy in spots, but with lots more of that gentle, focused energy). And no matter how many times I go down that 6/22/73 rabbit hole, I always find some whole new vistas to contemplate. Thanks for another stellar two hours!

  16. The third time was the charm, but I was able to download the show without any issues eventually. It was worth the wait, that last segment was absolutely sublime. I think I'm going to have to get the full show, it sounded like they had a pretty good He's Gone going leading into that.

  17. I love your podcast! I have been recommending it everyone I know who is a lover of music. Your sources are amazing! I would have to say that you have made me into an AUD convert after a long time of SBD loving (now I love both). The recording of Jerry and Merle at the Keystone is mind-blowing in terms of quality and playing. This is one of the only podcasts I have found myself listening to repeatedly. Also, I have to ask what you use as background music. It has an amazing relaxing effect on me and I would really benefit from putting that on repeat for a few hours :)

  18. Rev_Justin,

Thanks very much for your enthusiastic appreciation of the podcasts. I'm very glad you're digging them.

I just responded about the background music in another post. You can read them under the comments of GDLG-003

  19. Jerry's first solo in the '74 'Let It Grow' in this podcast is one of his most sublime, concise musical statements ever.

  20. I am slowly working my way through these podcasts. They are wonderful and revelatory. My jaw dropped and eyes teared up during that LOM "Litte Sunflower" -- you are right that it does not get better than that. Spectacular performance and sound quality! Any suggestions for finding those May/June '75 recordings on Mp3? Thank you for your passionate work.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hey Dr. Billvis - check out http://www.archive.org/details/GratefulDead and zero in on the dates that interest you. There is quite a bit out there, but not alot from May/June '75 as there just were not that many shows during that period.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks Dave L. I was in particular thinking about those Legion of Mary shows from May and June referred to in the Podcast. Unfortunately no LOM or JGB stuff in any form, as far as I can tell, exists in the archive. I love the Grateful Dead material there. It sustains me for sure.

  23. Dr. B, Let me see what I can do about getting the MP3s available. Stay tuned.

  24. I find the following on Lossless Legs (www.shnflac.net):

    Band: Legion Of Mary
    Date: 06/21/1975 - Saturday
    Venue: Keystone
    Location: Berkeley, CA
    Source: Audience FOB Recording

    Band: Legion Of Mary
    Date: 05/21/1975 - Wednesday
    Venue: Keystone
    Location: Berkeley, CA

    Band: Legion Of Mary
    Date: 05/21/1975 - Wednesday

    Source: Audience FOB Recording

    Legion Of Mary
    The Bottom Line
    New York, NY
    4-9-75 (early)
    Sick Bits Vol. 19

Looks like I've got some downloading to do!

Lossless Legs is membership restricted and sometimes hard to get in. It is all bit torrent and none of these have more than one seeder so downloading may be slow.

  25. Thanks Dave L. About 8 or 10 years ago when I first really discovered all the rich live music online and my tape collection had gone dormant for several years, I tried to figure out how Shn, flac, bittorrent etc.. works but didn't have the knowledge, software, time, and hardware to do so. I've relied on streaming and downloading MP3s since. I think I need to revisit the technology and try again.

  26. FINALLY had a chance to listen to this podcast, after having it on my computer for quite some time. GREAT selections, Noah. I was at the Providence show, it was my third show. I did not realize that was the longest Let it Grow. Time, of course, meant nothing...AT THE TIME. Keep it up, here. Love the blog and podcasts etc. Thanks again...

  27. Dude - I just want to thank you for doing these. I went to show from 89 fwd, and have gotten into all the GREAT live shows from the late 60s to early 80s that are freely available these days over the past years or so (Dick's Picks, Nugs, Archives.org) - but these podcasts are like having a more knowledgeable enthusiastic head pal saying, "hey, check this out..." and then seeing one new cool universe of shows after another! God these are good.

  28. A couple topics/questions seeking clarity and furthur guidance from GDLG and the greater GD community:

    1) I am not a member of etree nor of any other similar BT user group but am/was a trader of tapes/files all along. Back in the day I used to actively trade shows/tapes w/ lots of folks through the USPS and built a nice collection. Have a lot of stuff, some rare and some not up to hardcore Head taper standards - but sweet music all around. Still, I loved it all and amassed a pretty good collection that stands for itself, I think.

Flash forward many years and we are now in the digital age where, thank god, so much is preserved in crystal clear form for eternity. Who could ask for anything better?!?

For me, w/ what little free time I have any more I DL stuff off archive.org and go from there. My question is: am I missing out on better/cleaner/faster sources or is this as good as it gets? I would think it would be hard to beat but as someone outside of etree, etc. I wonder if I am missing out and there's a "secret clubhouse" I need to find and seek acceptance? Any insight/furthur confirmation is greatly appreciated.

    B) Related to my previous comments, maybe, where can I get my hands on some good JGB/LOM? I have checked out sugarmegs but when I DL I just end up w/ a disc of 1 song 80 minutes long. Plus, some our tight and clean and others not so much. Glad I got it, but is there a better way for better stuff? I know why it's not on the Llama but wonder if there's another source. Again, any insight/furthur confirmation is greatly appreciated.

    C) GDLG: any thoughts on spreading on into the JGB w/ your analysis or will it just be GD?

Thanks for any/all insight and guidance. This website deserves the internet equivalent of a Nobel Prize.

    Peace,

    Spiral Light of Venus.....(~}:-)!

  29. the let it grow is a revalation, man. Cheers to you. Ditto to the spiral light of venus before me, as per the JGB. I have it on unshakable authority that the next pure jerry release is gonna dig into the prime 1975 nicky hopkins, ron tutt territory. i think you should think about mining some of the FANTASTIC AUDs from said year in honor of the (FINALLY) official unveiling of possibly the most ferocious and tender version of JGB while the gettin's good... once again, your mission is pure, and i thank you for it.

  30. Great podcast - I keep coming back to this one.
I've been going mad though scouring the internet for that full '75 show with Little Sunflower. It was really mesmerizing. It's a burning itch I can't scratch - Do you think you can point us in the right direction?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yep the Little Sunflower was pretty great and almost impossible to find online. Getting membership to a trading community seems to be the only way but oh well...
